When Mental Health is part of the journey
Children living with serious medical conditions face more than physical challenges.
Some may begin to withdraw from friends, avoid activities they once enjoyed, or worry constantly about their health and what might happen next. Others struggle to trust their bodies, feeling anxious about symptoms, medical procedures, or situations that feel beyond their control.
For children living with conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, panic disorder, or acute stress disorder, these challenges can become even more pronounced.
They may avoid social situations, have difficulty concentrating in school, experience persistent feelings of fear or sadness, struggle to sleep, or find everyday tasks overwhelming. Some become hypervigilant, constantly scanning for danger or expecting something to go wrong.
Where Everything Changes
At SeriousFun camps, children living with serious medical conditions experience many of the building blocks that research identifies as Positive Childhood Experiences: feeling safe, forming supportive relationships, developing confidence, and experiencing a sense of belonging.
These experiences are more than fun. They help strengthen resilience and create protective factors that support emotional wellbeing, helping children navigate the mental health challenges that often accompany serious medical conditions.

Stories from Camp
Camp also changes how children step back into their lives.
They return home more confident in themselves and more connected to others. They carry forward stronger communication skills, a renewed sense of identity beyond their diagnosis, and a greater ability to cope with stress and uncertainty.
For many, the camp experience also brings a new sense of optimism about what their future can hold.
Research reinforces what we have known for years: when a child’s mental, emotional, and social wellbeing is supported, everything changes.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re sharing stories that show how camp supports children beyond their medical care.
Children whose worlds had grown smaller, until camp changed everything.

Some friendships take years to build. Others happen in an afternoon, when two people recognize something in each other that the rest of the world has never quite understood.
