At Camp, Christine’s World Got Bigger
Growing up, Christine was used to hearing that some things were off limits. She lives with a bleeding disorder, and a fall, bruise, or scratch could carry greater risk. There were activities she wanted to try but rarely got the chance to.
Then she came to Camp Boggy Creek, our SeriousFun camp in Florida.
A Chance to Join In
At camp, Christine picked up a bow and arrow, played basketball and soccer, and joined in outdoor activities. Trained staff and medical teams understood her needs and gave her the support to take part safely.
Instead of starting with what Christine couldn’t do, camp gave her the chance to find out what she could. Christine called it “an equal playing field.” Each time she tried something for herself, she had another experience to carry with her.
Taking That Confidence Home
Christine didn’t leave that confidence at camp. When she went home, she began asking her parents for more independence. She had real experiences to point to—things she had tried and learned she could do with the right support.
She returned to Camp Boggy Creek year after year, growing in confidence and independence along the way. Eventually, she came back in a whole new role: camp counselor.
What began with the chance to join in had grown into something much bigger. Camp gave Christine room to try, make her own choices, and build confidence through experience. Those experiences helped change what she—and her family—believed was possible.
Because when the chance to try becomes the confidence to do more, camp changes everything.
