A sudden loss of balance on a family holiday was all it took to turn the lives of Áine and her family upside down.
At seven years old, Áine was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Overnight, her new normal became one filled with hospitals, seemingly endless months of chemotherapy, and the long road of recovery.
During treatment, Áine had lost much of her mobility, so previously simple tasks—like eating, walking, and talking—had to be relearned. Life became a series of careful steps between appointments.

“The chemotherapy was horrendous. We were forever in hospitals. We didn’t get a break. When you have a child sick in the middle of the night, it’s probably one of the loneliest places you ever could be.” – Patricia, Áine’s mom
Those first years after treatment were a daunting climb back as Áine spent long stretches in rehabilitation. The weight of so much uncertainty and repeated daily challenges became all the family knew. That is, until Áine’s family heard about a place where Áine could play the way she used to.
When she first arrived at Barretstown, the SeriousFun camp in Ireland, Áine was quiet and unsure. Years of medical routines had made her understandably cautious.
But camp offered something different: freedom, wrapped in care.
Every activity was adapted so she could take part safely and fully. Nurses and doctors were nearby—not to remind Áine of her illness, but to make sure it never stood in her way.
One moment changed everything.
While at camp, Áine faced the climbing wall—something that felt impossible after struggling to regain her mobility and strength. Yet with perseverance and countless cheers from her camp friends below, Áine made it to the top of the wall with her own strength. This accomplishment restored Áine’s confidence, independence, and a belief she’d lost during illness: I can do this.

“She got up that wall. She really, really did. It was a huge boost of confidence for her.” – Patricia, Áine’s mom
With each summer spent at Barretstown, Áine grew more confident. The shy girl who once hung back began shedding the shadow of her illness, laughing louder, climbing higher, and trying more.
Surrounded by new friends and an atmosphere bursting with fun and acceptance, she rediscovered a sense of belonging—and herself.

“For the first time since her diagnosis, we saw Áine laugh the way she used to.” – Patricia, Áine’s mother
Today, Áine is 16 and thriving. Her journey reflects what camp is all about: the chance for children living with serious illnesses to reimagine what’s possible for their future. You gave Áine the confidence to stand taller, climb higher, and rediscover her strength.
