“Camp taught me I’m more than my diagnosis. It gave me the confidence to lead and the courage to speak up.” – Violet
As a kid living with HIV, Violet faced stigma and isolation in her community. She was uncertain of her future: What could a happy and healthy life with HIV look like?
For Violet, the SeriousFun camp in Malawi, called Camp Hope, answered that question in spades.
At camp, Violet found herself surrounded by caring and non-judgmental adults—mentors she felt safe with. That kind of steady support made all the difference: she found a community of people who people who treated her as a person, not as a patient, first.
Playful myth-busting games like ‘HIV Fact or Fiction’ helped dispel the stigma and shame she felt about her diagnosis, normalize conversations about HIV, and improve her adherence to life-saving medication. Through every conversation, shared laugh, and moment of trust, she learned how to speak up for herself and turn hard days into steps forward.

“The camp’s unique blend of fun and education provided a platform for me to learn essential life skills like stress management and acceptance of my health condition.” – Violet
Violet’s growth did not happen in isolation. Building her resilience took a village: medical staff who made her safety feel ordinary, peers who offered friendship with understanding, and volunteers who cheered from the sidelines. Within camp’s circle of care, Violet practiced being brave, confident, and connected.
Over time, the shy girl who had once shouldered silent shame became a young leader who knew how to hold a room and listen to others. Camp taught her how to carry her history forward as strength.
Ultimately, camp changed the way Violet saw her herself—building not just her practical skills, but also her belief in a vibrant future. Today, she channels that strength into action. As she completes her BSc in Public Health, she’s moved from camper to mentor.
She now guides young people living with HIV, amplifies their voices on world stages like the International Aids Conference, and builds communities of support where there is silence. She’s proof that when camp’s caring community shows up, a child can reimagine what’s possible—and grow up to advocate for the generation of children behind them.
SeriousFun supporters like you helped Violet find belonging, acceptance, purpose when she needed it most. Now through December 31, YOUR SUPPORT TODAY will have TWICE the impact for children living with serious illnesses thanks to a generous match.
