Our Journey: From One
Camp to a Global Network

Discover the milestones that have transformed SeriousFun Children’s Network into a global leader, providing life-changing camp experiences that empower children with serious medical conditions to thrive.

How the Fun Began

Over 30 years ago, actor Paul Newman envisioned a place where kids could break free from the fear and isolation of their medical conditions and, as he put it, “raise a little hell.” What began as a single camp blossomed into a global movement. Today, thanks to the unwavering support of generous donors and dedicated volunteers, SeriousFun Children’s Network includes 30 camps and programs — always free of charge — that bring joy, connection, and life-changing experiences to children and families around the world.

1988

The First Camp

Paul Newman opens The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children with serious illnesses in Ashford, Connecticut. A generous vision of creating a fun, safe environment for children of all circumstances and backgrounds finally became a reality.

1994

Becoming Global

Following in the footsteps of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp and Double H Ranch in New York, and with the generous donation of a 500-acre estate from the Irish Government, Barretstown in Ireland becomes the first camp outside of the U.S.

2008

Partner Program Launch

After an earlier trip to Africa, Paul’s global vision is realized when SeriousFun launches its global Partner Program, providing culturally applicable programs that excite and empower children around the world.

2012

Rebranding as SeriousFun

SeriousFun Children’s Network unveils its new brand name and logo, uniting Paul Newman’s global family of camps and programs.

2017

The Impact

Since the first camp opened in 1988, SeriousFun has delivered more than ONE MILLION life-changing camp experiences to children living with serious illnesses and their families, always free of charge.

Building on Strong Foundations

While our network has grown, our commitment to safety, inclusivity, and joy remains unwavering. These core values, instilled by our founder, continue to guide us as we expand our reach and impact.

“I think a lot of kids here [at camp] think that the hospital is their second home, but camp can replace that. This place is a lot more fun than being in a hospital. Camp feels like another home.”

SeriousFun Camper

“Family Camp taught us that, whilst illness may always be a part of our lives, it does not have to define them.”

SeriousFun Camper Sibling and Volunteer

“I’d been so nervous about relationships since I’d been in the hospital. I had no hair. But at camp, my friends were bickering over who’d support me by holding my arm!”

SeriousFun Camper

“There is no better gift you can give a parent who’s child has a serious illness.”

SeriousFun Camper Parent

“Seeing kids come alive at camp has made me a better physician, and a week of volunteering, as it turns out, is good for my mood and my
health, too.”

SeriousFun Medical Volunteer

“Volunteering at camp was a reset for me. It reminded me why I chose a career in medicine.”
