5 Fun Facts About Paul Newman
As the title of Paul Newman’s recently released memoir states, he considered himself to be an ordinary man who got to live an extraordinary life. And in the spirit of all that we think was beyond extraordinary about our founder, we wanted to share five seriously fun facts about Paul.
#1 – Paul first gave salad dressing away to friends as holiday gifts, filling wine bottles with his homemade mix. People loved it so much they came back looking for more! And that’s how Newman’s Own (the company committed to “giving it all away”) was born.
#2 – Paul was so embarrassed by his first film debut in The Silver Chalice (1954) that when the movie was scheduled to air on TV, he took out ads in Hollywood newspapers asking people NOT to watch it.
#3 – Paul Newman attended Ohio University before leaving to enroll in the Navy. While there, he was initiated into Phi Kappa Tau – a nationwide fraternity that holds SeriousFun as its national philanthropy, building on his own commitment to giving back.
#4 – A true visionary dedicated to turning ideas into action, Paul founded or co-founded more than six nonprofit organizations in his lifetime, including SeriousFun Children’s Network, and that doesn’t even come close to the number of those he inspired.
