We’re excited to share the results of a newly completed joint research initiative between SeriousFun Children’s Network and the American Camp Association (ACA):
“Promoting Character in Counselors: Training Programs for Medical Specialty Camps.”

This groundbreaking study affirms what many of us have seen firsthand: camp doesn’t just transform the lives of children with serious illnesses. It also builds character, confidence, and leadership in the counselors who support them.

What The Research Found

Through in-depth interviews, focus groups, and literature reviews, the project identified key character strengths consistently developed in camp staff across medical specialty camps. These include:

  • Empathy and emotional intelligence
  • Resilience and self-regulation
  • Leadership and purpose-driven service

Counselors described camp as a formative experience that changed how they communicate, problem-solve, and connect with others—skills that extend far beyond the summer.

Turning Insight Into Action

The project didn’t stop at findings. It produced a suite of training materials—including reflective journaling prompts, experiential exercises, and workshop guides—that SeriousFun is now using across its network. These tools ensure that character development isn’t left to chance—it’s embedded in the staff experience from the start. Download the Playbook here.

And because these tools are research-informed, they give camps new ways to talk about impact—not just for campers, but for the future leaders they help shape.

What This Means Going Forward

With this work, SeriousFun and ACA are helping set a new standard: one where youth-serving organizations invest in their people, not just their programs. It’s a powerful reminder that camp is more than a place. It’s a training ground for who we become.
